Pr Jean Girard, PhD
Member
Pr. Girard is Professor of Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine of the University Paris-Descartes. He has been Chairman of the department of metabolism and endocrinology at the Cochin institute (Paris) from to 2002 to2007. For 12 years Pr. Girard has been director of the research center for molecular endocrinology and development (Meudon, Paris). Pr. Girard initiated his career in physiology at the University of Paris then at the College de France where he get his Ph D. Pr Girard is an internationally renowned specialist on the hormonal control of carbohydrate and lipid metabolisms. He has identified the molecular basis of the action of insulin and glucose for the control of lipogenesis. These features had major impact for the understanding of metabolic diseases diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis. Several prestigious awards recognize excellence of his forty years’ research on the physiological and molecular bases of glucose homeostasis : Robert Denamur Award (INRA, 1976), Apollinaire Bouchardat Award (1979), Docteur and Mme Labbe (Académie des Sciences (1981), Antoine Lacassagne (Collège de France, 1982), Fondation Française pour la Nutrition (1990).
